Basically I am a small man and I want to make that change. Now I have a pretty good diet but what I want to know is what does your exercise plan look like? anything specific in there? much cardio? Your help would be awesome!
Well, what does your diet look like? What is your current weight and how many calories are you putting down a day? I found that for the first year and a half I was lifting, I was eating good but just not enough.
As far as workout routine. Compounds, compounds, and more compounds. I stick with big lifts and I lift pretty heavy. Here is a link to an older post with a sample routine, if you need assistance with anything else please let me know http://thethinkid.blogspot.com/2012/05/workout-routine.html
Congrats on the Men's Fitness link! How'd you learn what to do, re. specific exercises, routines, foods etc? I've got a few years on you (I'm 46) but have decided enough is enough. I'm 6'0" and 230lbs of solid fat so I think I need to lose weight before trying to build muscle mass. Fid you go with a personal trainer or mentor or just read and try different things til you found out what worked?
For me it has been trial and error. I just did a lot of reading. Mostly internet articles on Bodybuilding.com and Muscle and Fitness. Everyone is different so you sort of need to just find what works for you. For me lifting heavy and pretty much eating a load of food has been the answer but it took me a while to actually figure that out and learn to eat. I had no trainer or anything of that nature.
For you, I would take a look at bodybuilding.com and see if you can find a sample routine for fat loss. Building muscle is the best way to lose weight. I see a lot of people who are overweight at the gym just doing cardio, which isn't bad, but things would be a lot more effective if they had a weight routine on top of their cardio. Check this list of workouts and try one out http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/find-a-plan-fat-loss-over-40-male.html
Lastly, this is totally my opinion. Watch out for seeking info on forums, people think they know everything and could lead you in the wrong direction. I am glad to admit I do not know everything, but I know enough.
Thanks for the advice Mike, I didn't know about bodybuilding.com, it's a good site. I haven't used much in the way of free weights before, all my workouts have been a simple Nautilus circuit + cardio, so I signed up for a few sessions with a trainer at the gym. Once I'm comfortable, I'm going to give the Labrada plan for old, fat guys a try.
Thanks again for the advice and honesty, I'll keep reading.
